Leap Day Abstract Nail Art

 Press Sample

I only get to post on this day once every four years, so I threw together a nail art I have been wanting to do for so long. There are so many iterations of this type of abstract nail art on Pinterest that I am not really sure who to cite as the inspiration. You have seen me do abstract blobs and dots before on this blog and now I have added some leaves and squiggles.

You would think an abstract art like this would be quick, but this actually took a while because I thought a little too hard about where I wanted to place each blob of color and which color should go next to which one. So it actually did take me about an hour to do all ten nails but I will mention that I was moving rather slow. I wore this shiny for two days but knew it would be epic matte, and I was so right!

Here are all the colors I used! It's a lot. And this is why I have so many polishes. How many shades of yellow and orange do I need?!

  • Base: Morgan Taylor Barely Buff, 2 coats
  • Light yellow: Duri Cosmetics Sting Like a Bee
  • Medium yellow: Zoya Honey
  • Lighter orangey yellow: Lechat Dare to Wear Felicity
  • Darker orangey yellow: KBShimmer Oh My Gourd
  • Orange: Stella Chroma Bye Fall-icia
  • Green: OPI This Isn’t Greenland
  • Bright blue: Stella Chroma Raking It In
  • Dark blue: Jessica Cosmetics NY State of Mind

After doing the nail art, I realized that I really did not need to put any sort of base color down beyond my base coat. But I like to think that the Morgan Taylor leaves some protection on my nails and hopefully keeps them stronger. I chose so many colors though, that I ended up covering the majority of my nail so there was not that much negative space.

I know that this color palette is a little autumnal but I just love the hints of bright yellow and bright blue against the darker and dustier colors. It is getting me ready for spring despite February having the most snow we have had in over 2 years. I feel like the little bits of leaves added some spring fun as well.

I very much love how this nail art came out. It makes me so happy! See you in another four years, Leap Day!

  1. When I left a comment things were glitchy and I am not sure it went through. I really wanted you to know how much I love this manicure. I would love to see more like this. The colors are perfect and the dots are everything. I really want to try this one. Thanks for sharing .

    1. Thank you so much, Tami! I was and am still obsessed with this manicure. I just love the colors together and I definitely plan to do another version of this...minus any base color beyond base coat. It does not need it!
