The Zoya Velvet Matte collections was one of my favorite nail polish collections of all time. I am lucky enough to have the 2009 versions of these polishes so I decided to do a comparison to see if the 2009 versions were exact to the 2014 versions. And wow, you will be surprised to find out they are not the same! I am certainly excited that these are available to everyone now, but they are limited, so grab them quick. Continue reading for comparisons of the versions and to see these beauties in both matte and shiny versions.

All polishes are 2 coats. They have wonderful formulas, but because matte cause show some nail flaws, I did use base coat for all of the swatches. The Matte Velvet dry to a delicious suede-like finish. They are delicate and then top coat brings out the most unique shimmer! The shimmer allows these to be special matte or with top coat.
Posh: a crimson red that is probably the sexiest red nail polish I own. I feel weird wearing bright reds but Posh is truly stunning.

Dovima: a black matte polish but because of the shimmer, it is lighter. I don't love straight black polish on me but this again, is one of my favorites.

Savita: a plum matte polish that is an absolute favorite for most people. Surprisingly, this is very different from the 2009 version (see below). I have a huge fill line in my 2009 version, that's how often I used it.

Veruschka: an evergreen matte polish--perfectly named so. It reminds me of beautiful pine trees and is a deep beauty.

Loredana: Gunmetal grey--this is lighter than Dovima. Both are needed in my opinion.

Harlow: wine matte polish and the star of the collection--Zoya did not re-release this color last year and now it's for everyone to enjoy.

Comparisons with 2009 and 2014.: For all the comparisons I used two coats of the 2009 version on my ring nail. Then I added one coat of top coat on the 2009 nail and on a 2014 nail. Here are my conclusions:
- 2009 versions are actually not as matte as the 2014 versions, and I let it dry extra long just in case
- 2014 version has a much quicker dry time
- 2014 version actually looks smoother
- Most look the same when top coated
Posh 2009 looks completely different matte than Posh 2014, but look the same top coated. I was amazed how different they look in their matte state.

Dovima looks almost exact, so good news if you didn't catch it during the first release.

Savita is by far the most different. 2009 is more blurple and 2014 is straight purple. Again, I was very surprised how different these were!

Veruschka 2009, like Posh, looks different matte from Veruschka 2014 but the same when top coated.

Harlow is actually different! It is much more evident in person. Harlow 2014 is a tad more purple with more silver shimmer while 2009 is more wine toned.

I really enjoy comparison posts, your review is excellent!
ReplyDeleteI love comparison posts too and I hope this helps people who were curious about the re-releases!
DeleteWow great swatches. Thats a lot of work, look beautiful. I own only China Glaze but it smells so bad. Recently found out about the 3free and even 7free. I live in the Netherlands (europe) So if its available in America then we dont have it. I m crazy about them now. I have one of each collection. Beatrix, Loredana, Rue and the Meg. But i dont know what year. A question, I have Zoya colour lock system, do I have to wear base coat? Is it going to stain what Zoya says no need for base and topcoat. And last, can I use any base and topcoat? Like China Glaze or a cheaper brand? I just got back to work after a long time being very ill. Going to follow your blogs ;-) thanks in advance
ReplyDeleteHi Suzy,
DeleteHow old is your China Glaze polish? If you have older polishes from any brand, they may not be 3, 5, or 7 free, which is why it has a strong smell. There are e-tailers like Color4Nails that sells Zoya and ships internationally. I have over tons of Zoyas, dating back to 2008 and they are still fine. I personally always wear base coat, especially in the winter months, to protect my nails and keep them strong. It's really an experiment to find which base coat works for you. These polishes I wore WITHOUT base coat and WITH and both ways are fine. No staining to report with these but if you wear blues or bright greens, definitely wear base coat as those tend to stain. Like I said, you have to try base coats and see which works for you. I personally love Nailtiques 2 or Nailtek. If you check out my FAQ, I have list of base and top coats I like :) Thanks for following!
